Fil Doux Textiles releases fully-degradable vinyl alternative
Fil Doux Textiles has released a degradable vinyl alternative said to be fully decomposable. Otratex, the newest generation of the brand’s VinyLife collection, will fully decompose within 30 years of entering a landfill or other anaerobic environment.

When Otratex products hit the end of their life, the enzymes that were embedded during production give the phthalate-free vinyl its enhanced biodegradability. Once in an oxygen-deprived environment, according to the company, Otratex attracts microbes that colonize its surface and secrete enzymes which attract water.

Water expands the surface, providing microbes access to chemical polymers in the material. Microbes break the polymer chains into simple organic monomers, a degradation that continues until every chain is reduced to its raw elements.

Fil Doux Textiles, which has one vertical mill in Chile and one in Brazil, specialises in woven fabrics, sheers, vinyl, leather and digital textile printing. They produce their own base yarn, spin, weave, dye and finish all fabrics in house.

This launch comes, the company said, “as we continue to develop new technologies that make our product more sustainable and more in demand by our eco-savvy clients”.
