Oxygen-producing garments could be 'fashion of the future'

Treated with microbial pigmentation, the poncho behaves like a plant, taking in carbon dioxide and turning it into glucose and oxygen, using photosynthetic microorganisms, according to the companies.
During its life cycle, it neutralises the impact of its production, improves the immediate environment of the wearer and produces about the same amount of O2 as an oak tree, said Pakistan-based Azgard9.
Azgard9 CEO Ahmed Shaikh said: “While brands are thinking about their next collection, we have been thinking about collections of and for the future. In fact, about what garments may look like 50 years from now.
“So, we produced what could be part of every brand’s collection in 2043, if we all work towards the same goal. We were tired of thinking about how we could change the 'Future of Fashion' for the better and decided to do something about it.”
The jacket – which also has coatings and features that make it antibacterial, anti-odour, breathable, water-resistant and antiviral – has been sent to fashion retailers and brands.
Mr Shaik added: “The idea was to demonstrate to the fashion industry that we have the technology and that this can be done now. If people get excited and prioritise sustainability, we can together make a change to ensure a great future for our planet.”
