Vivobarefoot campaigns against harmful algae blooms
Footwear company Vivobarefoot has teamed up with environmental action company the Oxygen Project to send an open letter to UNESCO, and called upon governments to end destructive agricultural and industrial practices.

The letter, which also requests a global education programme to raise awareness, said: “Whilst algae blooms can occur naturally, there is now mounting evidence for the blooms becoming more frequent and damaging, as a result of human activity; the compound effect of a warming planet.

"Contributors to the issue include the flooding of the environment via fertilisers, pesticides and other toxic chemicals, including human waste, into waterways.”

It added the effects of algae blooms are impacting some of the planet’s most beautiful and ecologically important bodies of water.

Vivobarefoot co-founder Asher Clark said: “We are proud to be partnering Oxygen to launch this initiative. We hope this will inspire people and industry at large to live ‘barefoot’ and invest in a regenerative future of regenerative materials solutions that protect our planet and the world’s waterways.”

Vivobarefoot is releasing a new colour of its Ultra Bloom shoe to mark the partnership. The foam in the shoe uses algae biomass as a raw material.
