Nike ‘catsuit’ draws attention at French Open
When tennis legend and former world number one Serena Williams took to the Philippe Chatrier court at Roland-Garros in Paris for her first match at the 2018 French Open, it marked her first appearance at a Grand Slam tournament since the birth of her first child less than nine months previously, but it was her outfit that captured the attention of the watching public and media.

Ms Williams defeated her opponent Kristyna Pliskova 7-6, 6-4 in the match on May 29.

Following the contest, many of the questions she fielded during her media commitments focused on the all-black bodysuit she was wearing. Ms Williams herself referred to it as a “catsuit”, claiming it made her feel “like a superhero”.

The garment in question was designed specially for Ms Williams by Nike and the sportswear manufacturer has since released some details about it.

Nike has said it was originally intended to be a power suit to aid Ms Williams’ recovery and that it was in development for two years before making its debut in Paris this week.

Among its main technical features are a warp knit fabric designed to offer better levels of support and a zoned mesh for enhanced moisture management and breathability.

Serena Williams will continue to wear her Nike ‘catsuit’ as she attempts to win her fourth French Open title. The final takes place on June 9.
