BCI says ‘better cotton’ now has a 14% share

Campaign body Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which works to encourage clothing brands to make the most sustainable choices they can when sourcing cotton, has calculated that in growing season 2016-2017 a total of just over 14% of the total was what it classes as better cotton, which includes fair-trade and organic cotton.

Geneva-based BCI said this figure represents a 2% increase compared to the previous season and that 1.3 million licensed BCI farmers in 21 countries had produced 3.3 million tonnes of better cotton lint, enabling a record-level of more sustainably produced cotton to enter the global supply chain.
