AAFA pleased with US-EU trade talks announcement

The American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) has applauded an announcement from the US and the European Union (EU) that hinted at a de-escalation of trade tensions between the two global powers.

European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, travelled to Washington DC for discussions with US president, Donald Trump, on July 25. At the end of their meeting, they said in a joint statement that they were launching a new phase in the relationship between the US and the EU.

They also agreed to work towards zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies on industrial goods, except industrial goods relating to the automotive industry.

In response to this announcement, AAFA president and CEO Rick Helfenbein said in a statement: “This is certainly a step in the right direction. After months of working in an unstable business environment, we are glad to hear that our nation will resume civilised conversation with some of our closest trading partners, and that threats of new and additional tariffs will not be issued during these negotiations.”

He warned however that the US administration still has lots of work to do to resolve ongoing disputes with three other important trading partners: China, Canada and Mexico. He added that US consumers “will continue to foot the bill” for any tariffs imposed due to ongoing threats to these relationships.
