AAFA wants Canada to remain part of NAFTA
29/08/2018
Mexico, the US and Canada have been in talks to renegotiate NAFTA since 2017. On August 27, 2018, Mexico and the US announced they had successfully concluded negotiations on a replacement deal. Canada’s part in this new deal is not yet clear.
In a statement, Rick Helfenbein, president and CEO of AAFA, said: “The conclusion of talks between the US and Mexico is a positive step in the NAFTA negotiations, however it is essential that the updated agreement remain trilateral.”
He added that the apparel and footwear industry would need to review the details of the pact before forming an opinion on it.
“Any update to the agreement must continue to support American jobs, promote trade linkages, and be seamlessly implemented to be considered a success,” he said. “It is with this in mind that we are deeply concerned to hear any mention of withdrawal or termination of the existing agreement at this late stage.”
