Tariff bill could save ‘millions of dollars’, say US clothing bodies

The US-based Outdoor Industry Association and American Apparel & Footwear Association have commended the US House of Representatives for its approval of the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) Act, which will now move to the Senate for a final vote.

The AAFA had urged politicians to back the bill as it gives US companies the ability to eliminate or reduce duties on items not available or manufactured in the country.

“Given the scale of the undue duty burden our industry faces – in 2016, our industry generated more than 50% of duties collected by the US government despite only accounting for a mere 6% of total imports by value – such duty relief is critical for our industry,” said the association, which represents 1,000 companies including New Balance, Invista and Ecco.

Ten footwear MTBs submitted by OIA were included in the final package.

“OIA applauds the House’s unanimous, bipartisan vote in favour of the MTB package,” said Rich Harper, OIA’s manager of international trade. “Outdoor companies have successfully used past MTB rounds to save more than $30 million which led to lower costs, product innovation and more American jobs.”

Later this year, OIA will solicit ideas from those in the industry for the 2019 round of MTBs.
