Colombia to support textile industry after WTO ruling

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos says his government will support the country’s textile industry after the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rejected its appeal against a ruling that deemed tariffs on textile and footwear imports from Panamá were unfair.

President Santos made the comments at the opening of the Colombiamoda textile fair in the Colombian city of Medellín, considered one of the most important in Latin America.

He set the textile industry a target of $1 billion in exports by 2018. This would be a return to the levels of 2012 and 2013. He said the Colombiamoda event is among the reasons why this target is achievable. He also listed the country’s world-renowned brands and high active workforce as key advantages. Colombia’s textile exports for 2015 were approximately $800 million.
