Lack of home-grown cotton affecting Colombia’s textile industry
15/09/2016
Colombia currently produces approximately 20,000 tonnes of cotton each year, which only covers a third of the country’s needs. This means businesses are being forced to import 40,000 tonnes per year, an increasingly costly task as the price of cotton on the international market continues to rise.
The country’s National Association of Cotton Distributors (Diagonal) is calling on Colombian farmers to grow more cotton. Five years ago, Colombia had 43,931 hectares of cotton fields but this decreased to 34,473 hectares in 2015.
