Colombia to keep tariffs on imports from Panama

02/08/2016
The Colombian government has announced that it will maintain tariffs on imports from Panama, despite a decision from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) which deemed them unfair. Footwear and textiles are among the products for which the tariffs will continue to apply.

The decision was made by Colombia’s finance minister, Mauricio Cardenas, and minister of commerce, Maria Claudia Lacouture. The tariffs have been in place since 2012 to protect the country’s manufacturers from the low price of textile and footwear imports from Panama.

Guillermo Botero Nieto, president of the National Federation of Colombian Traders (Fenalco), said he believes that traders will be most affected by this decision, as it will drive up the prices of footwear products and textiles and so reduce consumption.
