WTO considers sanctions in Colombia-Panama dispute

08/03/2017
The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has created a special panel to examine if the Colombian government has complied with an order to remove tariffs on textile and footwear products from Panama.

The dispute has been ongoing for a number of years. In July 2016, the WTO ruled that the tariffs imposed by Colombia on these products were unfair. Although the Colombian government initially said it would keep the tariffs and appeal the ruling, it stated in November 2016 that it had met the WTO’s demands.

Panama has responded with its own tariffs on textile and footwear products arriving in the country from Colombia. These tariffs, which were ratified in February 2017, are expected to come into force on March 17.

Media reports suggest that the WTO could order Colombia to pay $210 million if it is deemed they deliberately disobeyed the ruling.
