Value of Colombia’s fashion imports down in May

Colombia imported fashion items, including textiles, garments, footwear and accessories, worth $160 million in May. This was a 13.2% drop on the same period of 2015. 

The data from Colombia’s department of national statistics showed the drop was even greater than in April, when fashion imports were down 12.6% year-on year. 

For the first five months of 2016, imports of fashion items to the country were down 16.9% to $820 million. Textile imports suffered the biggest drop (-26,7%), followed by garments (-21.8%) and footwear and leathergoods (-18.9%).

Imports of fashion items increased in volume, however. May saw import volumes of 28.886 tonnes, a 6.6% increase on the same month in 2015. For the January-May period, the total volume was up 2.1% year-on-year to 139.639 tonnes.
