Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism has revealed Colombia’s apparel industry is worth $775 million to the economy, growing from $59 million in 1991.

Textile exports from Colombia grew at a rate of 4% during the period, from $221 million to $342 million.

Japanese entrepreneur Shoichi Sasaki, president of Show One Sports, attended the recent Colombiamoda fashion trade show in Medellin and has been buying Colombian swimsuits for the past seven years because they are the “world’s best”. He added: “Their colours and designs are completely innovative for us in Japan.”

Philip Newman, a Canadian buyer, said: "Increasingly you hear more about the Colombian fashion in cities like New York, Chicago and Toronto. There are several reasons for that, but mainly it is because manufacturers in Colombia are production detailed-oriented and their trimming and needlework is just fantastic. Not only that, they also have a great work ethic and are fashion savvy.”
