Uniqlo explains thinking behind Roger Federer deal

The global creative director of Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo, John Jay, has said its new relationship with tennis legend Roger Federer is “much bigger than sports”.

The partnership was announced in July. Very few details have been revealed, but the deal is believed to be worth $300 million over ten years. This period extends well beyond the end of the athlete’s professional career.

“We develop high-performance clothes for everyone off the court, and we’d like to think the technology is good enough for an athlete,” Mr Jay added.

For his part, Mr Federer, who left sportswear manufacturer Nike to sign with Uniqlo, said the partnership was part of his preparations for his life post-tennis.

“What really resonated with me when we were speaking to Uniqlo was that they respected me not just as an athlete but also as a person with interests and passions beyond the sport,” he said. “I have to eventually think about life after tennis and Uniqlo was a great match for that.”
