28/09/2018
Opening the event, joint managing director of GOTS, Claudia Kersten, said the organisation’s life vision is for organic textiles to become “a significant part of everyday life”.
She told the audience: “The standard is an instrument. It can help you make a business case inside your companies for sustainability and, because of that, it can help give you a competitive advantage.”
In addition, Ms Kersten said, GOTS accreditation can be good risk management. She explained that the Chinese government has begun to take stringent action against companies in the textile supply chain that fail to me environmental standards; factories have been shut d fown. But she pointed out that this has not happened to any of the textile companies in China that already have GOTS accreditation.
India has by far the most companies with the accreditation with a total of more than 1,650. Bangladesh is next with around 500, followed by Germany with 480 facilities. China has just under 300 at the moment.
