Chemours and Huntsman to expand on DWR alliance
Huntsman Textile Effects and Chemours have agreed to expand their long-term alliance in the area of durable water repellency (DWR). “By combining the strengths of both companies in innovation, technical support and marketing, the expanded co-operation unlocks the full potential of the alliance to develop and deliver new, sustainable DWR solutions and chemistry,” they said in a joint-statement.

In the statement, the two partners made it clear that they will continue to develop fluorinated solutions, as well as pushing forward with non-fluorinated alternatives. On this point, Jay Naidu, vice-president, for strategic marketing and planning at Huntsman Textile Effects, said: “Our cooperation, which has stood the test of time, has clearly demonstrated that strong environmental credentials and performance can co-exist in equal measure.”

For her part, Chemours’ vice-president for fluoropolymers, Jesal Chopra, said: “This partnership reinforces our commitment to take a leadership role in the development of more sustainable and high-performing products that address the rapidly evolving needs of the textile industry and the consumers that use these products.”

The alliance between the two companies has been in place since the early 1990s and both say they have worked together to try to lead the textile industry’s transition from long-chain water-repellent products to less harmful short-chain chemistry. Non-fluorinated chemistry has followed more recently.

Products they have brought out as a result include Teflon EcoElite with Zelan R3 technology, introduced by Chemours in 2015, and Huntsman’s Phobotex RSY.
