Formosa Taffeta expands smart thermal clothing range
18/10/2018
The company unveiled the technology at the end of 2017. Using a heating module that is attached to the garment and controlled from a smartphone via Bluetooth, it gives the wearer greater control over their temperature. They are able to select their desired temperature and the technology will ensure that this temperature is maintained within the garment.
Teddy Hu, one of Formosa Taffeta’s representatives at the exhibition, showed sportstextiles a long-sleeved jacket featuring the technology. The previous models had been sleeveless. Another key change in this second iteration is that the heating module is no longer removable. The company felt that customers would prefer this.
Ms Hu said that although the jacket is washable, Formosa Taffeta does not recommend that its users do so, especially not at high temperatures in a washing machine. She explained that the company’s research and development teams are working hard to make it washable like a regular jacket, but that this is a big challenge.
After developing the smart thermal clothin technology, Formosa Taffeta’s next step has been to license it so that its brand partners can use it to create their own jackets, according to Ms Hu. She added that a number of its clients are now preparing to launch their products, although she was unable to name them publicly.
