Nike selects the winners of shoe material challenge

Sportswear manufacturer Nike has revealed it received more than 600 applications from 58 countries for a challenge it launched in February to find creative solutions for footwear material waste.

The challenge was split into two areas. The first involved finding new uses for Nike Grind materials, which are derived from recycled shoes. The other arm focused on proposals for ways to advance the recycling process itself.

Five groups won the ‘Design with Grind’ challenge. The solutions they presented included a line of yoga accessories, a collection of climbing holds for rock climbing walls, street safety products, a vacuum mattress, and a range of stuffed modular furniture.

The one group to be awarded in the ‘Material Recovery’ challenge were plastic recycling specialists who identified two new phases that could be added to the standard Nike Grin material recovery process.

They are an additional material separation step that divides outputs based on their weight, and an extra material-grinding step. Nike said the steps have the potential to improve the purity of the material outputs from the process.

The company is now considering if the six solutions could be further developed.
