Nike launches circular innovation challenge

15/03/2018
“Thinkers, makers, designers and engineers” have been invited by Nike to submit their proposals for how the sports footwear industry can move towards a more circular future.

The Nike Circular Innovation Challenge comes as the company seeks to rethink what it makes and how it makes it. It has said it wants to create better in order to reduce waste.

The challenge is divided into two areas.

The first involves finding new uses for Nike Grind materials, which are derived from recycled shoes. Previous applications for these materials have been in sports courts and running tracks.

Nike wants the public to submit their ideas for other ways to use these materials. One grand prize winner will receive $30,000, with four further winners each receiving $5,000.

The second branch of the challenge is looking for proposals for new technologies that can advance footwear recycling. These new solutions should replace or complement existing processes for recovering usable material, Nike has explained.

Submissions to both projects are welcomed until May 1. Full details can be found here.
