Woolrich to close its US woollen mill this year

23/11/2018
Pennsylvania-based outdoor apparel brand Woolrich has announced that it will be closing the woollen mill it operates in the town that inspired its name.

Operations will cease by the end of the year, with all 40 of its employees affected. The company has said it will provide “career transitional services” for those affected.

Nick Brayton, president of Woolrich, said in a statement: “The decision to close the Mill was made following a comprehensive review of our overall woven fabric business and the considerable capital improvements needed to modernise and maintain viable operations. Unfortunately, due to higher manufacturing costs, eroding margins and continued unprofitability within the mill, it is no longer economically feasible to continue our Pennsylvania-based woollen mill operation.”

The services offered to employees include severance pay based on the number of years they have worked at the mill, outplacement assistance such as resume preparation and interview skills, and job placement assistance with local employers.

The mill in Woolrich opened in 1845, making it the oldest, continuously operated mill in the US. It was one of the few woollen mills still in operation in the country.
