Nearly 30 companies from the plastics supply chain have set up a new global alliance to combat the problem of plastic waste, committing more than $1 billion to addressing the issue.

BASF, Clariant, Covestro, Dow, DSM, Formosa Plastics Corporation USA, Henkel, Reliance Industries, SABIC and Sumitomo Chemical are all among the founders of the group, the Alliance Against Plastic Waste (AEPW), which launched at an event in London on January 16.

Together, the 30 companies involved aim to invest $1.5 billion over the next five years to help end plastic waste in the environment.

“New solutions will be developed that will minimise and manage plastic waste,” they said. “This  includes solutions for used plastics and enabling a circular economy.”

BASF chairman, Dr Martin Brudermüller, commented: “Plastics are efficient materials that can save resources and enable health, safety and convenience for society. These benefits could be negated unless plastic waste is used, disposed of or recycled in a responsible manner.”
