Volcom project aims for organic cotton traceability

Kering-owned sportswear group Volcom has launched a new cotton traceability programme that it says will also have social and environmental benefits in India, where it has been introduced.

The scheme, known as Farm to Yarn, is being implemented in partnership with social enterprise CottonConnect. It will see the release of products featuring certified organic cotton that can be traced back to where it was sourced.

The initial launch has seen the production of nearly 27 metric tonnes of organic cotton. Volcom has said this represents around 15% of its total organic cotton supply. It comes from eight villages in the Madhya Pradesh region of India.

The programme offers social benefits to local farmers and their families. So far, this has come in the form of a year-long organic ‘farming skills’ initiative for 150 farmers in the Dewas district. This is designed to help them develop and fine tune natural pest control and their use of organic fertilisers. There is also an educational programme focused on skills for female farmers.

Volcom is also working to build links between different members of the organic cotton supply chain, including farmers, ginners, spinners and fabric mills. It believes this is the best way to ensure supply chain transparency.
