Textile solutions developer Polartec has launched an initiative called Eco-Engineering, committing to using recycled and biodegradable materials across its entire product line. It has said its aim is to create “the world’s first fully recycled and biodegradable fleeces”, as well as other knit fabrics, insulation fills and breathable waterproof membranes.

Partners Polartec will work with on this initiative include Unifi; it said it will use Unifi’s yarn products to “promote biodegradation of polyester and nylon”.

Chief executive, Gary Smith, commented: “Polartec is committing to the pursuit of a future where everything is eco-engineered to use recycled inputs and to be biodegradable. This is the culmination of more than 25 years of Polartec investment and innovation.”
?His counterpart at Unifi, Kevin Hall, said: “We look forward to this journey towards developing biodegradable materials and for more industry partners to join the sustainable pathway.”
