This issue leads with an article that examines the innovative ways the textile industry is using bacteria. This includes to carry out important processes like dyeing in a more sustainable manner. There are also companies employing biotechnologies to break down PET bottles and to create the building blocks of fibres.
Our other lead feature is dedicated to recycling solutions that are being developed around the world in response to the growing issue of textile waste. The goal is to be able to take this waste and convert it into new fibres that can be fed back into the supply chain.
This issue’s Newcomers section reports from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where a number of smart textile innovations were on display.
US outdoor brand United By Blue is the focus of our Sustainability feature. As well as organising clean-up activities across the US to combat the issue of waterway pollution, the company has also found a creative use for a by-product of the bison meat industry.
Other features in this issue include a round-up of the outdoor footwear on display at the recent ISPO exhibition, and details about how the Millet Mountain Group is dealing with an increasingly difficult retail environment.
The industry figure we spoke to for our Game Changers section is Lutz Walter, director of innovation and skills for the European Apparel and Textile Confederation (Euratex). He offers insight into the results of a recently concluded European Union project examining the digital skills needed in the textile sector.
