The key component of the project is a 3D-printable liquid silicone rubber developed by Dow. It offers the offers the ability to create silicone midsoles that are customised to a wearer’s foot shape and natural movements. The liquid silicone is known as Silastic 3D 3335. The process can take place in-store, with the partners saying at the time that it takes less than an hour to complete.

Charlie Zimmer, global strategic marketing director for silicone elastomers at Dow, said: “The QUANT-U collaboration showcases one of the infinite opportunities Silastic 3D-printable liquid silicone rubbers are opening up for designers seeking part design flexibility and the processing advantages of additive manufacturing along with the performance advantages of silicone rubber.”
