Elastomer manufacturer Dow and software developer Dassault Systèmes partnered with footwear brand Ecco at presentation events in Tokyo at the end of January for its new spring-summer shoe collection.

Part of the presentation focused on a new customisation project called QUANT-U, which the partners have developed together. A 3D-printable liquid silicone rubber from Dow is one of the key components and is central to the project’s ability to offer silicone midsoles that are customised to a wearer’s foot shape and natural movements. The entire process can take place in-store and takes less than an hour to complete.

Silastic 3D 3335 is the name of the liquid silicone Dow has developed. Dow has said the product can help optimise energy return, cushioning and foot stability. Midsoles will also be odour-free and will not contribute to bacterial growth. They are water-repellent, yet breathable, are extremely durable and are machine-washable.
