US recognition for Carbios depolymerisation technology

Bioplastics specialist Carbios has announced it has been granted a patent in the US for its proprietary enzymatic technology that is able to depolymerise PET waste back into its original monomers.

It filed this patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2013. Its innovation is now protected in the US until 2033. The company also holds a number of patents for the technology in other countries.

Making the announcement, the CEO of Carbios, Jean-Claude Lumaret, said: “This patent strengthens our competitive position for the recycling of PET and it is gratifying to have the USPTO recognise the innovative nature of our proprietary technology.”

Carbios has said its process offers a path towards a cost-efficient circular model for plastic recycling. This is because it does not require the extensive sorting operations demanded from conventional thermo-mechanical and chemical recycling methods.
