Carbios secures second US patent

The company said the patent covers its method of recycling complex plastics, including coloured, opaque and multi-layer products containing a mix of PET and at least one additional component.
This enzymatic process is said to be capable of depolymerising PET waste back to its original monomers, regardless of the composition of mixed PET plastic products or the presence of other components of polymers. Carbios has said this makes it a more viable solution than existing methods as it does not require pre-treatments, for example sorting.
This additional patent, which follows on from one secured earlier this year, protects the company’s technology through to 2033.
