Sewing thread manufacturer American & Efird (A&E) has released details of its latest sustainability achievements in a new corporate sustainability report.

This is the ninth year in which A&E, now part of the Elevate Textiles group, has published a sustainability report.

It said in the report that the volume of water it has recycled and reused since 2013 has now reached 2 billion litres. Since 2006, A&E has reduced by more than 40% the volume of water it consumes to produce each kilo of thread.

In the course of 2018, the company increased to 16 the number of its manufacturing and support facilities around the world that have achieved the target of sending zero waste to landfill. A further five plants around the world are recycling more than 90% of their by-products and created waste.

Overall, the company said it had reduced its carbon footprint by 13% since 2006 and lowered its energy consumption by 11% over the same span of time. In addition, in relation to the energy it uses to make steam at its production plants, the proportion deriving from renewable sources reached 45% in 2018.

Commenting on these successes, A&E president, Chris Alt, said: “We remain committed to holding ourselves accountable to our customers and stakeholders as we conduct our business in a transparent and ethical fashion.”
