Irish start-up pushes silver out of antibacterial coating

A start-up company called Mica NanoTech presented its textile coating processing technology in Frankfurt at Techtextil 2019 in mid-May.

Based at the Bernal Institute at the University of Limerick in Ireland, the company has developed Textilise, which manufacturers can use to apply coatings to a wide range of substrates, including cotton, viscose, polyester, nylon and acrylic.

Mica NanoTech says the technology can endow sportswear, workwear and other apparel with antibacterial, antiodour, water resistance and other functionalities.

It’s attracting the interest of customers, Mica NanoTech’s Dr Michal Osiek told WSA at Techtextil, because the company does not use silver. The technology, which is in the form of a nanocoating, uses zinc, titanium and copper sulfate instead. Tests have shown that the functionality continues at close to 100% effectiveness even after 100 washes.
