Techtextil recognises impressive textile innovations

The organisers of the Techtextil exhibition, which is taking place in Frankfurt from May 14-17, have announced the winners of their Innovation Awards for 2019. They were presented during the opening ceremony of the event.

For the first time, two winners were selected in the ‘Sustainability’ category. The first of these awards went to a working group made up of several European chemical and textile bodies. It recognised a project known as BIO4SELF, which aimed to create bio-based polymer composites.

The Portugal-based PICASSO project also received an award in this category for its development of a garment coloration process based on natural extracts from residues and species of mushrooms and plants. Textile group Tintex was among the participants in this project.

In the ‘New Technology’ category, awards went to Robert Bosch and Stoll, for a 3D flat-knitted sensor glove made of smart yarns, and to Germany’s Northwest Textile Research Centre, for the creation of a functional textile that allows noble metals, such as gold, platinum and palladium, to be recovered from industrial wastewater.

Germany’s Institutes for Textile and Fibre Research Denkendorf (DITF) and Beira Interior University (DCTT) in Portugal won in the ‘New Application’ category.

DITF’s award was for a space-saving inductive charging coil for hybrid and electric vehicles, which is made using high-tech knitting technology.

DCTT was recognised for a smart coat designed to protect workers from excess radio-frequency signals when climbing antennas. This is achieved thanks to a textile system that indicates when radiation levels exceed European Union guidelines.

There was just one winner in the ‘New Material’ category, Portuguese cork processing company Sedacor. The jury were impressed by its CORK-A-TEX cork-based yarn that has potential applications in fashion and interior furnishing.
