Biotech dyes could answer environmental concerns

French start-up Pili has secured $4 million in funding to boost development of its biobased dyes and pigments, which it says can reduce the environmental impact of textile dyeing.

Its products use microbial fermentation to produce dyes using less water, energy and fewer chemicals than standard textile dyes.

Jérémie Blache, Pili CEO and co-founder, said: "This new funding gives us credibility and the means to bring to market technology which is now developed by a team of 15, mainly biologists and chemists, working towards the rise of a circular economy.

“We believe biotechnology will enable a production of highly competitive compounds in the near future. Pili’s technology is designed to produce colours more efficiently with a strong decrease in fossil-based and polluting inputs."

Investors include venture capital firm VC Elaia, private investors, business angels and SOSV. The French government has also provided funding.
