Kraig prepares to import silk worms into Vietnam

21/11/2018
Developer of spider silk based-fibres Kraig Biocraft Laboratories has signed a memorandum of understanding with two Vietnamese groups, the Institute of Biotechnology - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (IoB - VAST) and the Vietnam Sericulture Research Centre (VSRC), to import and rear its transgenic silkworms in Vietnam.

The company said this agreement provides a location, skilled workers, security and the necessary oversight for it to import and begin testing its first batch of recombinant spider silk silkworm eggs in the country.

Under the terms of the agreement, VSRC will provide the manpower to hatch, care and nurture the silkworms, while IoB-VAST will provide a secure location to receive, store and preserve the silkworms in accordance with Vietnamese regulations.

Kraig will send key members of its team, including production staff, to accompany the first batch of transgenic silkworms as they make the journey from its lab in the US to Vietnam.
