Developer of spider silk based-fibres Kraig Biocraft Laboratories has celebrated the grand of opening of the first facility of Prodigy Textiles, its new subsidiary company in Vietnam.

The facility is located in the country’s Quang Nam province. It will support the company’s planned capacity growth in Vietnam during the first phase of operations and will serve as the launch pad for future expansion on land Kraig has already secured nearby.

The opening ceremony was attended by officials from the province and local district, as well as business leaders from the farming cooperatives that will provide Kraig with mulberry trees, the leaves of which are an important part of the diet of the transgenic silkworms responsible for spinning recombinant spider silk.

“Having now seen the new facility first hand I am confident that we will soon have a thriving operation up and running,” said Jon Rice, Kraig’s chief operating officer. “We are now in the process of getting the final building updates outlined and completed so that it will be ready to receive the first shipment of our silkworms.”
