Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the Geneva-based body that campaigns for increased production and consumption of “more sustainable cotton”, by which it means cotton that offers a fairer deal and education opportunities to farmers and has a lower impact on the environment than standard cotton, has reported its results for 2018.

Last year BCI’s 92 brand and retail member companies sourced more than 1 million tonnes of “better cotton” representing 4% of global production.

Fifteen companies feature on its ‘leader board’, a table BCI has compiled to show the leading users of its cotton in 2018. Together, this group sourced 88% of the BCI total.

Major retail groups H&M, Ikea and Gap took the top three places. Sports and outdoor companies that feature among the 15 include adidas and Nike, in fourth and fifth places, respectively, VF Coroporation in ninth and Decathlon in eleventh.
