Vietnam must step up fabric production to take advantage of EU deal

Vietnamese textile and clothing manufacturers will have to source textiles from inside the country if they are to fully benefit from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), according to local sources.

Under the Country of Origin rules, local garment firms must either source from within Vietnam or use fabric imported from countries that have signed deals with both parties, such as Korea.

However, most textiles are currently imported from China or Taiwan.

Clothing and footwear tariffs are set to fall from 12 per cent to zero, between three and seven years after the deal comes into effect.
