Polyester product ‘looks and feels like silk’, Teijin says

31/07/2019
Japanese fibre and fabric manufacturer Teijin has announced a polyester fabric that it says “looks and feels like fine silk”. It said it aims to secure annual sales of 150,000 metres of the new product by the fiscal year ending March 2022.

Teijin said it had noted for some time that materials in which “delicate fibre fluff is fibrillated on the surface of the fabric for smooth textures” were becoming popular. However, it also noted that these materials frequently presented challenges in the area of colour fastness, particularly when wet.

In response, it developed new processing technologies to make this new stable, easy-care polyester fabric “that boasts the soft texture and fine appearance of silk”.

The product has only a Japanese name for now.
