September comments show no end of trade dispute in sight

Official comments from China’s ministry of commerce give an indication of the Chinese government’s views on the ongoing trade dispute with the US.

On September 1, both countries began imposing new tariffs on an additional list of products, including a wide range of sports footwear, gloves and other equipment. These tariffs are in addition to those imposed on previous lists of imports and exports since the dispute began at the start of 2018.

In the build-up to September 1, an official spokesperson of China’s ministry of commerce said in a statement: “China is firmly opposed to this. Practices of commercial protectionism, unilateralism, intimidation and extreme pressure go against the consensus achieved by the heads of both governments [in Osaka in June], and fly in the face of the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.”

The statement went on to say that the imposition of new tariffs on these additional products “seriously degrade” systems of international commerce. And it warned: “The US will certainly reap what it has sown here. China urges the US not to underestimate the determination of the Chinese people and to bring to an immediate end this wrong action. If not, the US must accept the consequences.”
