Avantium awarded €6m EC grant
05/09/2019
The grant aims to accelerate Avantium’s Dawn technology, converting non-food plant-based feedstock into industrial sugars and lignin, and its Mekong technology, which converts industrial sugars into plant-based MEG. MEG is a component for making PET, PEF and polyester textiles.
The money will also be used to develop Avantium Catalysis, a high throughput R&D system.
Netherlands-based Avantium will participate in Impress, a four-year research programme, and will lead the consortium consisting of nine other industry and academic organisations across Europe: Sulzer, Knauer, Ircelyon, Lenntech, Vogelbusch Biocommodities, PDC, Thinkstep, Aalto University and South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences.
The consortium received a total grant of €13 million.
Tom van Aken, Avantium's CEO, said “Leading the Impress programme is a fantastic opportunity for us to work with like-minded organisations towards a fossil-free future.”
