BASF in new venture to make plastic from renewable resources

15/03/2016
Chemicals manufacturer BASF has reached an agreement with a Dutch partner, Avantium to establish a joint venture for the production of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a building block for polyethylenefuranoate (PEF), from renewable resources.

As part of the new joint venture, the two companies will market PEF together for uses including plastic bottles. Of interest to sports and outdoor companies is that these bottles will be recyclable after use and, if they later make their way into polyester for garments, will be able to enhance brands’ sustainability stories.
