An initiative of government minister, Dr Gerd Müller, the Green Button programme gives an indication to consumers that the clothes they are buying were made in accordance with social, environmental and sustainability guidelines set out by the ministry.
Vaude is one of 27 companies to have met all of the programme’s criteria at the time of launch. At an event in Berlin to mark the occasion, the outdoor company’s chief executive, Antje von Dewitz said that previous attempts to establish independent standards for products had brought opposition, both from campaign groups, who felt the requirements were too lax, and from manufacturers and brands, who felt they were too strict.
“Nevertheless, we have [now] managed to set a high standard that is a true milestone,” she said. “As the first state sponsored seal, the Green Button is a powerful resource for consumers who want to purchase ecologically and socially responsible textiles. I am truly delighted with the launch of the programme and the deep commitment that the participants have shown.”
