Down collections to start in Uniqlo stores after Toray breakthrough

19/09/2019
Fibre manufacturer Toray has worked in partnership with apparel brand Uniqlo to develop new technology to collect and recycle down material from used clothing.

Thin shells and a complex construction have combined to make collection and recycling of the filler material particularly challenging in Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down pieces. Toray has developed special extraction machinery to carry out the task using automated cutting, stirring, separating and recovery of the material.

According to Toray, its new technology is 50 times more efficient than tradition manual methods.

With this in place, Uniqlo will now start collecting used Ultra Light Down garments from its customers, using collection points in its stores in Japan. Its aim is to use the Toray technology to extra the down material efficiently and use it in some down products in its autumn-winter 2020-2021 collection.
