Water-saving commitment from viscose producer
Viscose manufacturer Birla Cellulose has said it will reduce its water consumption by 50% by 2025, using 2015 as the baseline year.

Part of the Mumbai-based Aditya Birla group, the viscose producer said it would introduce new technologies that consume less water, while also making reductions of its own and reusing and recycling water where possible.

At the time of the announcement, the company pointed out that reducing its freshwater intake will also lead to a reduction in its wastewater discharge.

“The world is grappling with severe water scarcity,” Birla Cellulose said. “According to a United Nations study, 2.1 billion people live in water scarcity today. The textile industry is one of the largest consumers of water, in the production of fibre and fabric and for irrigation of crops such as cotton. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number six calls for ensuring the availability of clean water and sanitation for all by the year 2030. Birla Cellulose is committed to improving the availability of water.”
