Birla Cellulose develops viscose fibre made with pre-consumer cotton waste

17/10/2019

Manufacturers of manmade cellulose fibre Birla Cellulose have released a new line of viscose fibre using pre-consumer cotton fabric waste.

Developed by Birla Cellulose’s own R&D team, the fibre currently uses a minimum of 20 percent pre-consumer industrial fabric waste. The Mumbai-based company plans to develop products made with more than 50 percent industrial fabric waste, as well as post-consumer clothing as inputs in 2020.

The fibre meets Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and illustrates Birla Cellulose’s ongoing interest in the circular economy.

"Launching of recycled viscose fibre is part of our commitment for circularity and sustainable practices,” said Dilip Gaur, Aditya Birla Group’s business director of pulp and fibre business. “We are also working on developing fibres using post-consumer clothing as inputs, in collaboration with technology providers and brands."
