Sustainable hanger features recycled chipboard and reusable hook

A new eco-friendly hanger aims to reduce plastic usage and give manufacturers and retailers a more sustainable option for hanging apparel. The EcoHanger, launched by business solutions provider SML, has recycled chipboard shoulders and a reusable plastic hook.

The EcoHanger's plastic hook is made from commonly used material such as polypropylene or polyethylene. The shoulders are constructed from at least 60% recycled pulp fibre-based chipboard which can be attached to the plastic hook at the garment factory.

At checkout, the hook can be detached and processed for recirculation while the chipboard can be processed for recycling. The hanger, part of SML’s EcoInspire collection, is currently undergoing pilots with US retailers.

According to the company, over fifteen billion hangers are produced globally each year which typically end their lifespan at checkout and immediately sent to landfill as most traditional hangers cannot be recycled.

“Like all plastic waste, traditional hangers contribute significantly to the harmful chemicals that leach into our groundwater,” said Eric Rhyner, VP of print packaging solutions and sustainability at SML Group. “With consumers and retailers becoming increasingly conscious of reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, there is a need to introduce options which are better for the environment, whilst optimising how we operate.”
