End link between oil and economic growth, Covestro CEO says

Chief executive of materials manufacturer Covestro, Markus Steilemann, has said it is “crucial” to break the link between achieving economic growth and consuming oil-based raw material to make plastics.

Speaking in the immediate build-up to the K 2019 plastics trade fair in Düsseldorf, Dr Steilemann said Covestro is committed to advancing the circular economy and the use of non-fossil raw materials in the plastics industry.

He said: “We need a complete transition from a throwaway to a circular economy in order to handle limited resources more responsibly and protect the climate.”

Covestro was one of a number of companies to set up global alliance to end plastic waste at the start of 2019.

In Düsseldorf, Dr Steilemann said: “High-quality plastics are, and will remain, drivers for sustainability and for overcoming global challenges. However, it is crucial to decouple the economic growth achieved from the consumption of fossil resources such as crude oil.”
