Covestro’s ‘exhaust gas’ CO2 adds elasticity to footwear foams
Covestro converts exhaust gas CO2 into a precursor for plastics, replacing up to 20% of fossil-based raw materials, and markets it under the name Cardyon.
Plama-pur’s Eco Foams add cushioning to running, trekking and ski boots. Its customers laminate the cut foam pieces onto self-adhesive materials and punch them out into various shapes.
Covestro claims the foams have better elasticity and a finer cell structure than those made from 100% fossil-based raw materials.
The CO2-based precursor has also been used by Chinese shoe designer Axis Liu. It is applied to the upper by hot stamping and features good scratch and abrasion resistance, said Covestro.
