Covestro strides into 3D printing solutions for footwear
Polymers manufacturer Covestro is working with a partner on 3D-printed insoles after it was inspired by visitors to last year’s OTWorld orthopaedics trade fair in Leipzig.

There, it showcased a solution for a 3D printed orthopaedic shoe last, reducing the manufacturing time from a few weeks to a few days.

It discovered orthopaedic insoles are often produced by hand in a time consuming process, and tend not to be breathable due to the types of material used.

Working with a partner, Covestro claims initial tests have been promising, both in terms of functionality and longevity.

Patrick Rosso, head of additive manufacturing at Covestro, said: “Our TPU products cover a wide range of hardnesses, which can also be adjusted by changing the printing structure.

"This allows manufacturers to print shoe insoles that are completely custom-made, with hard or soft contact areas.”
