Toray film can help wearable devices work better

Toray Industries has an elastic film that it says can easily recover its original shape and size after folding and rolling. Potential applications include wearable devices.

The Japanese company is developing mass-production techniques for the film with a view to a full launch in 2020. It said wearable devices on clothing or directly on the skin that collect biometric information represent an area of growth.

“These devices need resilient films that can absorb shock and recover their dimensions after deforming,” Toray said. “But conventional film technologies present trade-offs between flexibility and restorative capabilities, as cross-links have to be reduced to ensure flexibility.”

It has used proprietary polymer engineering technologies to develop a film that eliminates these “trade-offs”.
